Caring for Your Laptop Hard Drive

Author: admin

Laptop Hard DriveYour laptop hard drive can be easily damaged, and most of the time, the damage is caused by inappropriate handling by the user.  You can decrease the chances of hard drive failure and data loss by implementing the following tips when handling your precious laptop.

Give Your Laptop a Break

Your laptop is a machine and it needs to rest to always run properly.  An overworked person would be stressed out and an overused laptop would lead to hard drive failure as well as many other hardware issues.  Never let your laptop hard drive run for twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Avoid Turning Off Your Laptop When Your Hard Disk is Still Working

A standard hard disk drive spins at an average of 7200 rpm.  Your drive spins at a very rapid rate when it is reading and/or writing.  If you turn off your computer all of a sudden while it is doing that, your hard disk will be vibrating and the rubbing of your hard drives disc head and disk would result in physical hard drive damage.  The damage appears on any Windows operating system as “Bad Sectors” or “Bad Tracks”.  Always remember to shut your computer down properly, only after your hard drive has completed any reading or writing operations, and never when you are saving something and closing or opening any file or program.  It is understandable to forcibly turn off your laptop when it hangs, but at least minimize doing it.

Regularly Defrag Your Hard Drive

Saving/Deleting Files and Adding/Removing Programs causes your laptop hard drive to have non continuous spaces and fragments.  Your hard drive and your computers performance is affected by that.  Keep your drive in good shape by regularly defragmenting your hard drive.  Your Windows operating system has a built in system tool called “Disk Defragmenter” to help you take care of your drive and help maximize your laptop’s performance.
